Farmer dies in Tiger attack in HD Kote taluk

A Tiger from the Bandipur national park killed a farmer in HD Kote on Wednesday, triggering concern among villagers and forest officials.

The forest department concluded the big cat is not a maneater because it didn't bite its victim and escaped into the wild seconds after the attack. It has launched combing operations in the region.

About 10.30am, B Basavaraju of Naadu Haadi, a tribal hamlet in HD Kote taluk, was in the fields when the tiger suddenly attacked him that proved fatal. The attack took place 300 metres outside the tiger reserve. Park director HC Kantharaju said they found tiger pugmarks at the spot.
He, however, said the tiger hasn't targeted humans. It hit Basavaraju on his head and that caused death. He may have survived had he sustained injuries on his body. If it had targeted the villager, it would have dragged the body into the forest. There are no bite marks on the victim's body, he added.
The conservator of forests said he has given Rs 1 lakh to the family of the deceased and is awaiting the postmortem report.
Victims of wild animal attacks are eligible for Rs 5 lakh compensation.
The attack comes 15 months after a tribal woman was killed by a big cat on the forest bordering Bandipur. After its capture from Heballa much later, the tiger was shifted to the Mysore Zoo where staff sent samples to Bangalore's Institute of Animal Health and Veterinary Biologicals. The tests revealed it wasn't a maneater.
Forest officials said it's unlikely any tiger in the area has turned into maneater as they haven't witnessed cattle-attack incidents.
